Fly Fishing Abaco

Fly Fishing Abaco

One of the more developed, and second largest island in landmass behind Andros, in the Bahamas, Abaco is a paradise for anyone. The countless islands and cays encompass a land area of approximately 5,350 square miles. This offers boaters and anglers endless opportunities. The northern most island of Abaco is Walker’s Cay, which is world renown for its offshore fishing. The vastness of Abaco attracts sailors and other cruisers and makes it the Sailing capital of the Bahamas.

The main island of Abaco is a great place for non-anglers and the family. Treasure Cay is a great place for anyone looking for more than just fishing. Golf, scuba diving, boat rentals, tennis, offshore fishing and beautiful beaches are just a few examples of what is available. There are many smaller cays just off the island for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the more developed towns. You can base your fishing out of these smaller resorts and explore what makes Abaco a great destination.

The Bight of Abaco and The Marls draw the flats angler to Abaco. The Marls lie on the west side of Abaco and is a series of mangrove lined cuts leading to some of the most productive flats in the area. The very soft bottom and the turtle grass make great habitat for small grass and snapping shrimp, which get the bonefish feeding like crazy. Smaller flies in size #4 and #6’s, with little to no weight are the most effective for the majority of Abaco’s flats.
