Tierra del Fuego

Located at the southern most tip of South America, Tierra del Fuego, or Land of Fire, is home to the world’s most productive Sea Run Brown Trout Fishery. The Rio Grande and Rio Gallegos are the most productive and is where the majority of lodges are located. Over the past few years the fishery has improved both with respect to increased numbers and overall health of the fish, therefore the catch rate has increased as well. With these rivers water levels are key to success. Good water levels add to the anglers success, but of course it is nearly impossible to predict exactly when the fish will move into the river. The season is December – April and the prime weeks fill up years in advance. If you intend to fish Tierra del Fuego, it is never to early to begin planning.

Another famous feature of Tierra del Fuego is the significant wind that can be present, however, the rivers have huge bends and meander through the countryside to provide anglers with opportunities to use the wind to their advantage, why fight the wind when it can benefit you? Shannon likes to chase these big anadramous fish with his spey rod. Spey fishing is very popular on these rivers and being proficient with the spey cast can vastly improve your chances of success. If you are not a two-handed kind of angler, a single hand 8 or 9 weight will work just fine.
