Winter on the South Fork

February 21st, 2012

The South Fork of the Snake offers a legitimate option for winter fishing in the Jackson Hole area. Weather is very critical, but when you get a day in the high 20′s to 30′s fishing can be quite productive. Nymphing the tail outs and softer seams should be the most productive with a variety of basic nymphs and rubberleg stonefly nymphs. When it warms up a bit, you may find some fish up and feeding on the surface eating midges. Current flows out of Palisades Dam are approx 3,100 cfs, which is higher than normal for this time of year. This has made for some good fishing on nicer days. It is well worth a trip over to Swan Valley for some of the best winter fishing our area has to offer. Call us for more details.

UPDATE: Rob Parkins, guide for TLAPC, was on the river today. How was the fishing? It was good with nymphs, catching both Trout and Whitefish. A double nymph rig with a Parkins PR Muskrat along with an egg under an indicator  was the most effective, especially in the slower runs with about 4′ of depth. Due to time constraints, the guide had to push down river right as they came to a run loaded with rising trout.

This is a great ime to get out on the river, with little to no crowds and weather dependant, the dry fly fishing can be spectacular. The nymphing almost always produces good results. Bad snow, stiff bones or just need a day off from the slopes – there are fishing opportunities to be had in the area.

The Lodge of Palisades Creek is currently running a special of $395 per day for full day, 1 0r 2 anglers, on the South Fork of the Snake. Give Westbank Anglers a call to help you arrange your trip.
