Fishing the Snake River in the winter
January 10th, 2012
Jackson Hole is not known for it’s winter fishing options. It is more of a skiers paradise in the Winter, however, if the weather is right the fishing opportunities on the Snake River can be surprising. On the typical January or February day we see temps in the teens, and the Snake River has a nice flow of anchor and frazzle ice, this is not the weather you are looking for – you would spend your time fighting the ice in the river and the ice that would build up on your guides. When we get a day in the low 30′s, it might be worth a look at the river, if the temps reach the mid 30′s, it is time to grab the snow shoes, and hit the river in the middle of the day. March is when we get this type of weather and it gets people itching to wet a line. Early season nymphing and a middle of day midge hatch can get the trout feeding in this nicer weather. April is typically when the Jackson Anglers gets excited, fishing in April can be some of the best of the year, you just have to pick your days and look for moderate weather.
